Open Source Horizons | Why Godot Is The Engine You Should Know About

Similar to basically everything in video games, game engines have changed a lot throughout their brief history. From the early days when games were developed from scratch for specific hardware and developers had to write custom code for each game, going through the 1990s with the actual emergence of engines separated from the game’s content (specifically driven by FPS engines like the Doom Engine and Unreal Engine) and the arrival this side of the millennium of mainstream game engines like Unity and CryEngine, to the last decade or so with the actual democratization of the tools; one of the landmarks of this last stage is the rise of open source engines. Cocos2d-x and OGRE are a few of a long list of open-source choices for game development, but by far, the most relevant, powerful, and fast-growing example is Godot.
